The Story Behind Our Story

In 1996, Harvest Mission Community Church began at the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with Pastor Seth Kim and his family, a group of eight people, and a vision to be a 1st-century church in the 21st century. As we looked into the book of Acts, God gave us the vision to be a community of faith that raises bold disciples of Christ who will transform the world.

In 2001, with an influx of students from all across the world at the University of Michigan, a “Global Access” ministry was started to respond to the overwhelming need to reach out to the international community. As many international students became Christ-followers and were discipled during their time in Ann Arbor, they returned to their home countries upon graduation.

In 2006, as our HMCC family began considering an international church plant, some of the church leaders visited our international alumni in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

The First HMCC International Church Plant

In 2009, Pastor Seth and his family and a church plant team of eight people were sent by HMCC of Ann Arbor to start HMCC of Tangerang (then known as HMCC of Jakarta) with the vision of reaching out to Universitas Pelita Harapan and the Jakarta metropolitan area.

In 2010, as planned, Pastor Seth and his family and four of the original church plant team members returned, and Pastor Andrew Jun <link to leadership page> and his family and another church plant team of four people were sent by HMCC of Ann Arbor to continue to nurture HMCC of Tangerang. Over the years, we saw a growing number of members who worked and lived in Jakarta. In 2015, we commissioned Pastor Eric, his wife, Tina, and a core group of 24 members to start HMCC of Jakarta (then known as Grogol campus) to live out our vision in that city.

Our ministry has expanded to encompass people from different walks of life—from infants and youth to single adults to married couples and families. Although the composition of our church may continue to change, our vision will always remain the same. We desire to see people’s lives transformed, redirected to God’s purposes, and set out to transform the world for the glory of God.
